Most Common Words in the Quran: Top 50 List with Meaning

Counting each word in its dictionary form, the most common word in the Quran is مِن min, "from", which appears 3,226 times. Right behind it are Allah (2,699 times), lā "not, no" (1,742), fī "in" (1,701) and inna "indeed" (1,682). Below is the full list of the top 50, each with its Arabic, how to say it, its meaning in English and Roman Urdu, and exactly how many times it appears.
How these words were counted
A word list is only as good as its counting, so here is the method in plain terms.
- Source: the Quranic Arabic Corpus, which tags every word of the Quran with its dictionary form and root.
- One word, all its forms: "to say" is counted once, whether it appears as قُلْ qul "say!", qāla "he said" or qālū "they said".
- Joined letters are not separate words: tiny attached pieces like wa- "and", bi- "with", li- "for" or the ending -hum "them" are counted as part of the word they sit on.

What this list tells you about the Quran
Allah and "Lord" are at the very top
Allah is the second most common word of all, and rabb "Lord" is 12th (975 times). You say both in every rakʿah: al-ḥamdu lillāhi rabbi l-ʿālamīn. Our Surah Fatiha meaning guide goes through that surah word by word.
The Quran speaks: "say", "he said", "they said"
Qāla is the most common verb, sixth overall. Much of the Quran is speech: Allah telling the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ what to say, prophets speaking to their people, people answering back. The command qul, "say!", opens several surahs we recite often:
Say: O disbelievers!
Aap keh dijiye ke aey kaafiro!
Surah Al-Kāfirūn · 109:1
Belief, the Day, and the earth
Among the top 25 you also find āmana "he believed" (537 times), yawm "day" (475 times) and arḍ "earth" (461 times). Yawm often points to the Day of Judgment, as in Surah Al-Fatiha:
Master of the Day of Judgment,
Badle ke din (yaani Qayamat) ka maalik hai
Surah Al-Fātiḥah · 1:4
Eleven verbs in the top 50
From #103 onwards the verbs pile up: ʿalima "he knew", jaʿala "he made", jāʾa and atā "he came", ʿamila "he did", ātā "he gave", raʾā "he saw". Learn them as a group; they return in story after story.
Is it true that a few hundred words cover most of the Quran?
Yes, with one honest condition. The 600 words in the book are the main word in about 8 out of every 10 words of the Quran (79.8% of its 77,429 words — counting the core word, not small attached letters like wa-, bi- or pronoun endings).
That does not mean you will understand 80% of every verse. Grammar, context and the rarer words still matter. What it does mean is that most of what you hear stops being a stream of unknown sounds. We explain the method in Is it true 600 words make up 80% of the Quran?
How to learn the top 50 in two weeks
- Five words a day, in the order above. Say each aloud with its meaning three times.
- Find them in what you already recite. Allah, rabb, yawm, qul, lā and min are all in the short surahs you pray with.
- Cover and test yesterday's words before starting new ones.
That is all 50 in ten days, with time left for review. For a gentle start with Lesson 1, see our Quran vocabulary guide for beginners, and for the bigger picture, how to understand the Quran.
Beyond the top 50
The list keeps going with words like shāʾa "he willed", muʾmin "believer", khalaqa "he created", janna "Paradise" and nār "Fire". Our book, 600 Words of the Quran, takes you through all 600 in 30 lessons, each word with a real verse, its meaning in English and Roman Urdu, and its count. See what is inside on the book page.
