Surah Takasur Meaning (Takathur) in English & Urdu, Word by Word

Surah Takasur Meaning (Takathur) in English & Urdu, Word by Word

Surah At-Takathur means: The race for more has kept you busy — until you reach the graves. No! You will soon know. Again no! You will soon know. If only you knew with certain knowledge — you would surely see the Fire. Then you will see it with the eye of certainty. Then on that Day you will be asked about the blessings you enjoyed.

In Urdu: Zyaadati ki chaahat ne tumhein ghaafil kar diya, yahan tak ke tum qabristaan ja pahunche. Eight short verses, and every one of them lands like a knock on the door.

People search this surah as "Takasur" and "Takathur" — both are right. The Arabic letter ث is pronounced "th" in Arabic but "s" in Urdu, so in India and Pakistan we say Takasur.

What does "Takathur" mean?

At-takāthur comes from the root k-th-r, which carries the idea of "much" or "many". The form takāthur means competing to have more than each other. It's not just wanting more — it's wanting more than the next person: a bigger house than the neighbour, more followers, a better car, a son in a bigger company.

You already know this root even if you don't know Arabic:

Arabic Say it Meaning In the book
كَثِير kathīr many, much (Urdu: kaseer) word #58 · 63 times
أَكْثَر akthar most, more (Urdu: aksar) word #56 · 80 times
ٱلتَّكَاثُرُ at-takāthur rivalry in having more — (same root)

Urdu aksar ("usually, mostly") and kaseer ("a lot") come straight from here. That's one of the hidden gifts of learning Quranic words as an Urdu or Hindi speaker — you often already half-know them.

Surah Takasur verse by verse, with word-by-word meaning

For each verse: Arabic, Pickthall's English, Roman Urdu of Junagarhi's Urdu, and then the words. "In the book" = the word's number in 600 Words of the Quran and how often that word appears in the Quran. A "—" means the word isn't in the 600 list.

Verse 1

أَلْهَىٰكُمُ ٱلتَّكَاثُرُ

Rivalry in worldly increase distracteth you

Zyaadati ki chaahat ne tumhein ghaafil kar diya

Surah At-Takathur · 102:1

Arabic Say it Meaning In the book
أَلْهَىٰكُمُ alhākumu has distracted you, kept you busy —
ٱلتَّكَاثُرُ at-takāthur the race for more —

Verse 2

حَتَّىٰ زُرْتُمُ ٱلْمَقَابِرَ

Until ye come to the graves.

Yahan tak ke tum qabristaan ja pahunche

Surah At-Takathur · 102:2

Arabic Say it Meaning In the book

زُرْتُمُ zurtumu you visited, you reached —
ٱلْمَقَابِرَ al-maqābir the graves (Urdu: maqbara) —

Zurtum literally means "you visited". Life is described as a race that goes on until we "visit" the graves — as if the grave is only a stop, not the end. The next verses explain why.

Verses 3 and 4

كَلَّا سَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ

Nay, but ye will come to know!

Hargiz nahi tum anqareeb jald hi maloom kar loge

Surah At-Takathur · 102:3

ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ

Nay, but ye will come to know!

Hargiz nahi, phir tumhein jald ilm ho jaayega

Surah At-Takathur · 102:4

Arabic Say it Meaning In the book
كَلَّا kallā no! by no means word #380 · 33 times
سَوْفَ sawfa will (soon) word #376 · 42 times
تَعْلَمُونَ taʿlamūn you (all) will know ʿalima, word #103 · 382 times
ثُمَّ thumma then, again word #28 · 338 times

The repetition is the message. Verse 4 is verse 3 again with thumma ("then") in front. It's like saying "No — you'll find out. Then again, no — you'll find out."

Verse 5

كَلَّا لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عِلْمَ ٱلْيَقِينِ

Nay, would that ye knew (now) with a sure knowledge!

Hargiz nahi agar tum yaqeeni taur par jaan lo

Surah At-Takathur · 102:5

To beshak tum Jahannam dekh loge

Surah At-Takathur · 102:6

ثُمَّ لَتَرَوُنَّهَا عَيْنَ ٱلْيَقِينِ

Aye, ye will behold it with sure vision.

Aur tum use yaqeen ki aankh se dekh loge

Surah At-Takathur · 102:7

Arabic Say it Meaning In the book
لَتَرَوُنَّ la-tarawunna you will surely see raʾā, word #104 · 271 times
ٱلْجَحِيمَ al-jaḥīm the blazing Fire, Hell word #488 · 26 times
لَتَرَوُنَّهَا la-tarawunnahā you will surely see it raʾā, word #104
عَيْنَ ʿayna eye ʿayn, word #151 · 57 times

Look at the pair: ʿilm al-yaqīn (verse 5) and ʿayn al-yaqīn (verse 7). First, "knowledge of certainty" — knowing something for sure because you've been told. Then, "eye of certainty" — seeing it with your own eyes. The surah is saying: you could have had the first kind of certainty now, from the Quran. Otherwise you will get the second kind — when it's too late to act on it.

Verse 8

ثُمَّ لَتُسْـَٔلُنَّ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَنِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ

Then, on that day, ye will be asked concerning pleasure.

Phir us din tum se zaroor bil-zaroor naimaton ka sawaal hoga

Surah At-Takathur · 102:8

Arabic Say it Meaning In the book
ثُمَّ thumma then word #28
لَتُسْـَٔلُنَّ la-tus'alunna you will surely be asked saʾala, word #306 · 106 times
يَوْمَئِذٍ yawma'idhin on that day yawm #20 (475 times) + idh #29
عَنِ ʿani about ʿan, word #21 · 465 times
ٱلنَّعِيمِ an-naʿīm blessings, delights naʿīm, word #500 · 17 times

Naʿīm is from the same root as niʿmah (Urdu: naimat). The surah doesn't say the blessings were haram. It says you'll be asked about them — where they came from, and what you did with them.

The shape of the surah

Read it again and notice the movement:

  • Verses 1–2: what we are doing now — racing for more, all the way to the grave.
  • Verses 3–5: a warning, repeated, then a wish: "if only you knew".
  • Verses 6–7: what we will see.
  • Verse 8: what we will be asked.

It starts with more and ends with naʿīm — the blessings. The same things we competed over become the things we're questioned about. That's the whole surah in one line.

How to use Surah Takasur in your own life

  • Recite it in namaz after Al-Fatiha — it's short enough for any rakʿah. When you reach thumma kallā sawfa taʿlamūn, slow down. You now know it means "then again, no — you'll soon know".
  • Use verse 8 as a daily check. At night, pick one naimat from your day — food, health, a phone, time — and ask: how did I use it?
  • Notice the words you now own: ḥattā, kallā, sawfa, thumma, law, ʿilm, ʿayn, yawm. You will meet all of them again. Thumma alone appears 338 times in the Quran.

Surah Takasur pairs naturally with Surah Asr, which comes right after it and also talks about loss and time. For more Hereafter words like jaḥīm and naʿīm, see words about the Akhirah in the Quran. And if you want the whole set of short surahs, start with the last 10 surahs with meaning.

Why learning the words first helps

Almost every word in this surah that isn't a rare word is in the book's list — kallā, sawfa, ʿalima, thumma, raʾā, yawm, ʿan, saʾala. These are the words that carry the Quran. The 600 words in 600 Words of the Quran are the main word in about 8 out of every 10 words of the Quran (79.8% of its 77,429 words — counting the core word, not small attached letters like wa-, bi- or pronoun endings). Lesson 1 starts with just 25 of them.
