Ameen Meaning in Hindi & Urdu — and When to Say It
Reviewed by Abrar Iqbal, Islamic scholar (PhD in Islamic research)

Ameen means "O Allah, accept (this dua)", or simply "so be it." In Urdu: Aey Allah, qubool farma. In Hindi: ऐ अल्लाह, क़बूल फ़रमा.
It is one of the most-said words in a Muslim's day: after the Fatiha in namaz, after an imam's dua, after your own duas, and when someone makes a dua for you. A single word, and the hadith says the angels say it with you.
O Allah, accept (our prayer).
Aey Allah, qubool farma.
Āmīn · said after a dua, and after Surah Al-Fatiha in namaz
How to say it: Āmīn, with a long first "aa". Common spellings: Ameen, Aameen, Amin, Aamin, Amen.
Ameen in Urdu and Hindi
اے اللہ، قبول فرما
ऐ अल्लाह, क़बूल फ़रमा
Ameen ka matlab · Urdu and Hindi
In Hindi script: आमीन. In Urdu: آمین.
Ameen and the Fatiha
The Fatiha ends with a request: "Show us the straight path, the path of those whom Thou hast favoured; not the (path) of those who earn Thine anger nor of those who go astray." Ameen is your signature under that request.
The path of those whom Thou hast favoured; Not the (path) of those who earn Thine anger nor of those who go astray.
Un logon ki raah jin par tu ne inaam kiya un ki nahi jin par ghazab gussa kiya gaya (yaani woh log jinhon ne haq ko pehchaana, magar us par amal pairaa amal karne wale nahi hue) aur na gumraahon ki (yaani woh log jo jahaalat ke sabab raah-e-haq se bargashta phir gaye ho gaye)
Surah Al-Fatiha · 1:7
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Say Amen when the Imam says 'Ghairi l-maghdubi 'alaihim wala d-daalleen'; all the past sins of the person whose saying (of Amin) coincides with that of the angels will be forgiven." (Sahih al-Bukhari 782, English adapted from sunnah.com)
And in another narration: "When the imam says ameen, say ameen", with the same promise; the narrator added that the Prophet ﷺ himself used to say āmīn (Sahih al-Bukhari 780, Sahih Muslim 410).
So after every Fatiha, the angels are saying Ameen too. The reward is for the one whose Ameen meets theirs. For every word of the surah, see Surah Fatiha meaning.
Aloud or quietly?
This is a well-known difference between the schools of fiqh. Some say Ameen aloud after the Fatiha in the prayers where the imam recites aloud; others say it quietly. Each follows evidence it considers strongest, and both are practised by millions of Muslims. Follow what you were taught, and respect those who do it the other way.
Ameen after every dua
Ameen is not only for namaz. Whenever a dua is made, by you, by the imam on Friday, by someone for you, saying Ameen joins you to it. That is why people answer "Ameen" when someone says barakallahu feek or JazakAllah khair to them: they accept the dua being made for them. See Barakallah meaning and JazakAllah khair meaning.
The Quran promises that dua is answered:
And your Lord hath said: Pray unto Me and I will hear your prayer.
Aur tumhaare Rabb ka farmaan hai ke mujh se dua karo, main tumhaari duaaon ko qubool karoonga
Surah Ghafir · 40:60 (part)
Two words from this verse are in our 600-word list: daʿā, "he called, prayed" (#305, 170 times), from which dua comes, and istajāba, "he answered, responded" (#318, 28 times). Saying Ameen is asking Allah to do exactly what this verse promises.
Ameen is not "amin"
Two Arabic words sound alike:
| Word | Arabic | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Āmīn (long "aa") | آمِينَ | O Allah, accept |
| Amīn (short "a") | أَمِينٌ | trustworthy, faithful |
Amīn is used in the Quran for the prophets. In Surah Ash-Shu'ara the Prophet Nuh tells his people: "Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you", innī lakum rasūlun amīn (26:107). Junagarhi's Urdu gives it as amaanatdaar, trustworthy. The same family of words as amaanat (a trust) and amn (safety) in Urdu.
When writing the dua word in English, Ameen or Aameen shows the long "aa" best.
When to say Ameen
- After Surah Al-Fatiha in namaz (when, and how loudly, differs between the schools; follow what you were taught).
- After an imam's dua, at a nikah, at any gathering.
- After your own dua, to close it.
- When someone prays for you: "May Allah bless you." "Ameen!"
Ameen is a small word with a big meaning: "O Allah, I mean this, please accept it." For everything else you say in namaz, see what to recite in namaz. Words like daʿā, istajāba and rasūl are taught in 600 Words of the Quran, each with a real verse and its meaning in English and Roman Urdu.

Frequently asked questions
What does Ameen mean?
Ameen means 'O Allah, accept (this dua)', or 'so be it'. In Urdu: 'Aey Allah, qubool farma.'
Why do we say Ameen after Surah Fatiha?
The Fatiha ends with a dua for guidance, and Ameen asks Allah to accept it. The Prophet ﷺ said: when the imam says 'ghayril maghdubi alaihim wa lad dallin', say Ameen; whoever's Ameen coincides with the angels' is forgiven his past sins (Sahih al-Bukhari 782).
Is Ameen said aloud or quietly in namaz?
The schools of fiqh differ: some say it aloud in the loud prayers, others quietly. Both are followed by large numbers of Muslims; follow the practice you were taught.
Is Ameen the same as 'amin' (trustworthy)?
No. Aameen (with a long first 'a') is the word said after a dua. Amin (with a short first 'a') means trustworthy, as in 'rasulun amin', 'a faithful messenger' (Quran 26:107).
