Prophets Names in the Quran: How Often Each Is Mentioned

Prophet Musa (Moses) is the most-mentioned prophet in the Quran: his name appears 136 times. After him come Ibrahim (69), Nuh (43), and then Yusuf and Lut (27 each). Below are all the prophets' names that are frequent enough to be among the 600 most common words of the Quran, with their Arabic, how they are written in Roman Urdu, and a real verse where each name appears.
Muslims say ʿalayhi s-salām (peace be upon him) after each prophet's name. We have written the names simply here, but please read that respect into every one.

A few notes on reading this table:
- Isrāʾīl is another name of Prophet Yaʿqub. In the Quran it usually appears in Banī Isrāʾīl, "the Children of Israel", meaning his descendants.
- The counts are for the name itself. Prophets are also referred to as "he", "Our servant" or "the messenger", and those are not counted here.
- Scholars commonly count 25 prophets named in the Quran. Names like Ismaʿil, Idris, Hud, Salih, Shuʿayb, Yunus, Ayyub, Zakariyya and Yahya appear less often, so they did not make the 600-word frequency cut. That says nothing about their rank with Allah.
One verse for each prophet
Musa (Moses) — 136 times
No prophet is named more often. Here Allah speaks to him directly:
And what is that in thy right hand, O Moses?
aey Moosa! tere is daayen haath mein kya hai?
Surah Ṭā Hā · 20:17
His brother Harun (Aaron, 20 times) is often named alongside him: "Peace be unto Moses and Aaron!" (37:120).
Ibrahim (Abraham) — 69 times

Ibraheem (alaihis salaam) par salaam ho
Surah Aṣ-Ṣāffāt · 37:109
You mention Ibrahim in every prayer, in the Durood: kamā ṣallayta ʿalā Ibrāhīm. Our Durood Ibrahim meaning guide explains that part word by word. His son Ishaq (Isaac) and grandson Yaʿqub (Jacob) are named together in 21:72: "And We bestowed upon him Isaac, and Jacob as a grandson. Each of them We made righteous."
Nuh (Noah) — 43 times
Peace be unto Noah among the peoples!
Nooh (alaihis salaam) par tamaam jahaanon mein salaam ho
Surah Aṣ-Ṣāffāt · 37:79
Yusuf (Joseph) — 27 times
A whole surah, the twelfth, carries his name and tells his story from beginning to end.
Verily in Joseph and his brethren are signs (of Allah's Sovereignty) for the inquiring.
Yaqeenan Yusuf aur us ke bhaiyon mein daryaaft karne walon ke liye (badi) nishaaniyaan hain
Surah Yūsuf · 12:7

Yeh hai sahih waaqia Isa bin Maryam (alaihis salaam) ka, yahi hai woh haq baat jis mein log shak wa shubha mein mubtala hain
Surah Maryam · 19:34
His mother Maryam is the only woman named in the Quran, and her name appears 34 times, more often than ʿIsa's own. A whole surah, the nineteenth, is named after her.
Dawud (David) and Sulayman (Solomon)
And We bestowed on David, Solomon. How excellent a slave! Lo! he was ever turning in repentance (toward Allah).
Aur humne Daawood ko Sulaimaan (naami farzand) ata farmaaya, jo bada achha banda tha aur be-had rujoo karne wala tha
Surah Ṣād · 38:30
Sulayman (17 times) is named in 27:30, the letter he sent that begins "In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful".
Many prophets in one verse
This single verse names eleven prophets and lists the revelation given to them, together with the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, to whom it is addressed:
Lo! We inspire thee as We inspired Noah and the prophets after him, as We inspired Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the tribes, and Jesus and Job and Jonah and Aaron and Solomon, and as We imparted unto David the Psalms;
Yaqeenan humne aap ki taraf isi tarah wahi ki hai jaise ke Nooh (alaihis salaam) aur un ke baad waale nabiyon ki taraf ki, aur humne wahi ki Ibraheem aur Ismaaeel aur Is'haaq aur Yaqoob aur un ki aulaad par, aur Isa aur Ayyoob aur Yoonus aur Haroon aur Sulaimaan ki taraf. Aur humne Daawood (alaihis salaam) ko Zaboor ata farmaayi.
Surah An-Nisāʾ · 4:163
Try reading the Arabic slowly and picking out each name. Even if you know no other word yet, the names alone tell you what this verse is about.
And the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ?
His name is not on the frequency list, but he is everywhere in the Quran. He is named in verses like 3:144 and 48:29, which begins مُّحَمَّدٌ رَّسُولُ ٱللَّهِ, "Muhammad is the messenger of Allah". Much of the Quran is addressed to him directly, with qul "say!", and with titles like this:
O Prophet! Allah is Sufficient for thee and those who follow thee of the believers.
Aey Nabi! tujhe Allah kaafi hai aur un mominon ko jo teri pairvi kar rahe hain
Surah Al-Anfāl · 8:64
You greet him with the same word, an-nabiyy, in every Attahiyat: as-salāmu ʿalayka ayyuhā n-nabiyy. See our Attahiyat meaning for the full word-by-word.

A simple way to learn these names
Most of these names are already familiar to Urdu speakers, so the work is recognising them in Arabic script. Take three names a day and find each one in the verse above or in the table. Then, when you listen to a recitation, try to catch the names: they are often the first thing a beginner can pick out, and they tell you which story the passage is about.
All these names and words are in our book 600 Words of the Quran, in its lessons on the Prophets and revelation, with a verse and meanings in English and Roman Urdu for each. See the full list of lessons on the book page, or start with the most common words in the Quran.
